Back in 1998, I sat in an auditorium filled with hundreds of people and watched Bert Hellinger lead family constellations for 2 days. I never left my seat but those 2 days changed my life.

The normal rules about love, death, families, tragedies, illness, war, and loss expanded in unimaginable ways. People who were struggling with depression, with money, with illness, with relationship issues, were transformed on a huge scale. Tragedies and losses from the past were still affecting the lives of family members several generations later—even if they had no conscious knowledge of the original events.

There were stories of how after a constellation, family members half way around the world—who had no idea a constellation had been done—were suddenly transformed. I felt changes happening in me just from witnessing other people’s constellations. It became obvious that we are all way more connected than we have any way of knowing.

Since then, working with people in this profound and deeply moving way as blocks to happiness, health, love and success resolve out of the family system has been immensely satisfying. It is both humbling and inspiring to witness first hand how deep and powerful the love is behind so many of the "problems" we encounter in our lives, and to see how that same love can create enormous shifts and blessings.

What Is Family Constellation?  

A constellation is a format for working with transgenerational energies that show up in our lives as illness, depression, financial struggles, relationship issues, lack of motivation, addictions, etc.

Volunteers are used to represent members of a person’s family, or aspects of their experience. The representatives are placed in spatial relationship to each other. Bert Hellinger describes it this way:　

　

" A client selects from a group representatives for members of his family and puts them in relationship to one another. If he has set them up, he may be very much surprised of what he suddenly sees. In the first picture something hidden is usually shown already. For instance, we may see that some of the members want to leave the family. And we see, when they are set up, the representatives feel like the people they represent without knowing them. So, they know about the people they don't know. That shows something about the human condition. We are not just on our own, we are connected with many others in a very mysterious way. What also comes to light in family constellations is that in the end all in the family are equal. Nobody is better, nobody is worse. So at the end, we can be very humble and take our place in our family, and by taking our right place in the family, we feel good and free." 

The family dynamics and unconscious entanglements begin to show up quite clearly as a general rule. Then these unconscious dynamics and entanglements can be brought to light and acknowledged. After this acknowledgment it is sometimes possible to allow for a healing resolution to come about, allowing the client to be free of the block or limitation.

This work has a profound effect not just on the family of the person doing the constellation, but also on the people participating as representatives, and those watching.
